Yahoo! has launched a customized version of Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2, which has Yahoo search built into the browser.
The customized browser sets Yahoo.com as the default home page on the primary tab, while Yahoo Mail automatically loads in the secondary tab. The Internet giant used Microsoft’s Internet Explorer Administration Kit to customize IE 7, according to a Friday post on IEBlog.
Although Yahoo’s customized browser presets the home page and search to Yahoo properties, “users can easily change the settings, just as they can with the standard version that [Microsoft] ships,” according to IE Blog.
Last month, antitrust regulators investigating Windows Vista appeared satisfied with Microsoft’s plans for the operating system, including IE 7′s search box, which defaults to Microsoft’s own MSN Search.
As part of its status report on Microsoft’s antitrust compliance, the U.S. Department of Justice said it had reviewed the search box and concluded that Microsoft’s implementation “respects users and (computer makers) default choices and is easily changed.”
Google last month claimed that IE 7′s default to MSN was anticompetitive. The search giant has a close working relationship with the Mozilla Foundation, whose Firefox browser competes with IE 7.

Yahoo! has launched an updated version of its messenger service, in beta, with plug-ins that allow users to share more information.
The update will enable users to run many software packages simultaneously, so groups can watch movies together, or share their calendars. Third party plug-ins will also allow Yahoo!-ers to track and share wish lists on Amazon, or keep tabs on an eBay auction.
The service also allows up to 1GB for file transfers, according to reports, and has extended the maximum number of contacts anyone may have to 1,000.

Yahoo! has launched a new video website which it hopes will out-shine competitor sites such as Google Video and YouTube.
Yahoo! Video site enables viewers to search for videos, browse them by category, or user-generator tags.
If a video features on another site, Yahoo! will direct them to it, otherwise, the viewer just needs to click the play button to get started.
Those who upload their videos can keep track of how many people have watched them, can read other peoples ratings, and reviews and forward content and links to friends.
Users can also transfer videos to their personal blogs or websites, create their very own favourites listings and display them as play lists to the public.

A mass-mail worm that exploits a vulnerability in Yahoo’s Web-based e-mail is making the rounds but the impact appears to be low, security vendor Symantec said today.
The worm, which Symantec calls JS.Yamanner@m, is different from others in that a user merely has to open the e-mail to cause it to run, said Kevin Hogan, senior manager for Symantec Security Response. Mass-mail worms have usually been contained in an attachment with an e-mail note encouraging a user to open it.
The worm, written in JavaScript, takes advantage of a vulnerability that allows scripts embedded in HTML e-mail to run in the users” browsers. Yahoo users should be able to modify their settings to block the zero-day exploit, Hogan said.
Symantec rated the worm a Level 2 threat, one notch above its least harmful ranking. Hogan said the worm did not appear to be spreading widely, and he did not anticipate the threat level rising.
